Hawaii Golf Tips | Makena Golf Courses

Course Tips

  • You start with a straightforward par-4. The wake-up call comes at the second - the No.1 handicap hole, a long par-5 with a severely sloping green.
  • The fourth is an inland par-3, a green guarded on the right by a picturesque, sometimes deadly duck pond.
  • The fifth is a long, uphill par-5 that gets narrower the closer you get to the green. It plays nearly as tough as the second hole.
  • The sixth is an excellent example of option golf. Off the tee, you have a choice of two fairways divided by a gaping ravine, which must be crossed sooner or later. The safe play is to the right, then worry about the ravine on the second shot. If you go left, the carry is longer but the angle of approach to the green is better.
  • At 620 yards from the back tees, 582 from the regular tees, the 14th is the second-longest hole in Hawaii. It plays downhill all the way and long-hitters can reach the green in two. But watch out for the fairway bunkers.
  • The final three holes are relatively short par-4s, but require accuracy off the tee as they wind through the Kiawe trees.
